M100 is an intermediate spiral galaxy. It is located in the constellation coma berenice about 67 million light-years from the Milky Way. It was discovered by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain in 1781 and then a month later by Charles Messier who ranked it 100th in his catalogue.
Thanks to observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, a star-forming disc around the core of M100 and a supermassive black hole have been detected.
The large field shows how this region is teeming with galaxies of all kinds

M100 est une galaxie spirale intermédiaire. Elle est située dans la constellation de la Chevelure de Bérénice à environ 67 millions d'années-lumière de la Voie lactée. Elle a été découverte par l'astronome français Pierre Méchain en 1781 puis un mois plus tard par Charles Messier qui la classe à la 100ème place de son catalogue.
Grâce aux observations du télescope spatial Hubble, on a détecté un disque de formation d'étoiles autour du noyau de M100 ainsi qu'un trou noir supermassif.
Le grand champ permet de constater à quel point cette région fourmille en galaxies de tout genre

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
